FOOTNOTE FROM THE FOOTHILLS

Review

Just a small note of confirmation that Phil and Dave finally succeeded at the third attempt in reaching the summit of Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain) on Saturday 24th May.

There were several incidents of note-such as

1. Phil mistaking Kerry Katona’s coke balloon for the Old Trafford test match blimp

2. Horrendous traffic on the M6

3. Dave dethroning Phil and winning the 2008 Keswick Pitch and Putt Open in a last hole thriller holing from off the green

4. Meeting more eccentric (but friendly on this occasion) characters-such as Jeff-the tattooed psychotic Welshman-who invited us for a free meal in Swinsdale and the three 20 something hitchers we picked up in Rossenthwaite who invited us for free beer-we declined.

5. Getting lost on Sty Tarn but attempting to guide a couple to the top of Great Gable with our formidable map reading skills

 6. A fairly buttock-clenching 7 hour ascent from Seathwaite Farm to the top of the Pike and back again-including a couple of rock climb scrambles (one of which was particularly hairy-particularly bearing in mind the tragic events that befell a couple from Kings Heath a week later)

7. Some great views of the twin peak of Scafell-a truly foreboding piece of rock-which will be the target for our next ascent.

Later Press release:

...Wandering along and looking up dave pointed out how great all the features in the mountains were and commented “ look at the faults and folds of the mountain” I miss heard him and asked who Fulton Foulds of the mountain was, dave then went off on one and created an 18th century intrepid explorer who conquered Scafell Pike with only a pipe, a bar of Kendal mint cake and his trusty musket by his side!  We referred back to ‘old fulton ’ to pep us up on our quieter, more stressful moments!
